Frequently Asked Questions

My child attends church and Sunday School.  Why is a Christian education important to add to that?

At CCS we integrate academics excellence with Christian living and faith.  Students learn to apply Biblical principles to all subjects, and how to interact in a Christian way with teachers and peers.  We are partners with you and your church to help train your child to live out his/her faith now and in the future.

Do I need to belong to a specific church to attend CCS?

No.  CCS is a multidenominational school with more than twenty local churches represented throughout the student body.  We do not teach the doctrine of one denomination but focus on knowledge of the Bible, the relationship of students with their Savior and their understanding of what it means to be followers of Christ.

How is faith integrated into the classroom?

Teachers integrate academic excellence with Christian living.  Students learn to apply Biblical principles in many subject areas, and in their interactions with their teachers and their peers.  Teachers and staff challenge students to recognize the gifts God has given to them and to develop their intellectual, spiritual, artistic and physical gifts.

What does it mean to be parent-owned?

CCS is governed by the parents of its students as opposed to a church or some other entity.  The Board of Directors is elected by our parent association and is responsible for hiring employees, setting school policy, and monitoring the finances of the school.

What expectations do you have for parent involvement?

As a parent-owned school, we rely on the time and energy of parents who work with the teachers, staff, and principal to remain focused on its vision.  Parents volunteer on school committees, classroom helpers, room parents, playground supervisors, field trip drivers, and in any area where they see a need.

How does CCS compare with other schools on test scores?

Our school uses the Iowa Basics achievement test.  Students from the third through the eighth are tested annually.  In nearly every subject area CCS students have consistently tested well above grade levels.

What are the school's hours?

The school day for first through eighth grade runs from 8:30a.m. to 3:05 p.m.

Do you offer half-day or full-day kindergarten?

We offer a half-day academic kindergarten program from 8:30 to 11:40 a.m.

We also offer an extended day program in the afternoon.  You may choose to stay two or three afternoons a week the first semester.  Second semester you may choose to stay two,  three or four afternoons a week.  The program in the afternoon builds and extends what was taught in the morning.

Are teachers available to discuss a student's education?

Teachers at CCS are available and willing to answer any questions you may have about your child's progress.  Our school philosophy is based on the belief that teachers and parents work together to educate students.

What expectations do you have for parent involvement?

As a parent-owned school, we rely on the time and energy of parents who work with the teachers and administration to remain focused on its mission.  Parents volunteer on school committees, as classroom assistants and room parents, lunch time supervisors, field trip drivers, library assistants, and in fund raising endeavors.

How do I find out if school is closed?

Any cancellation of school or delayed opening due to inclement weather follows the decisions of the Penn-Harris school district.  Our name will also be listed separately for school closing or delayed opening on the WNDU and WSBT's website and TV stations.
